Department of National Defense - Philippines Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. led the Philippine delegation to the 18th ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and 11th ADMM-Plus held in Vientiane on 19-22 November.
The 18th ADMM adopted the Vientiane Declaration of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting on ASEAN: Together for Peace, Security, and Resilience. The document highlights the role of ASEAN Centrality, international law including the 1982 UNCLOS, and deepening defense and security cooperation in ensuring a stable region and effectively responding to common security challenges.
On 20 November, Secretary Teodoro, along with Ambassador Deena Joy Amatong and DND Undersecretary Ignacio Madriaga, met with Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense General Chansamone Chanyalath, to sign the Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation Between the Philippines and the Lao PDR. During the meeting, both sides expressed commitment to furthering cooperation in people exchanges and training courses, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), disaster risk reduction, and building resilience.
Among his other activities, Secretary Teodoro also participated in the Australia-Japan-Philippines-Republic of Korea-United States Defense Ministers’ Meeting, and met bilaterally with some of his counterparts. In his engagements, the Secretary pushed for, among others, maritime security, HADR, regional security and stability, and commitment to lasting peace with partner countries.
