University of the Cordilleras instructors and scientists, Ms. Aldith Mirador and Ms. Stefany Caliao, and their adviser, Ms. Melinda Beninsig, participated in the ASEAN Data Science Explorers (DSE) Regional Finals 2024 held on 23 October 2024 at the ICTC Center in Vientiane. Congressman Marquez Go, who is in Vientiane for the 45th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), and Ambassador Deena Joy Amatong threw their support behind the finalists.
The finalists pitched their project for a waste management app called ALERTRASH that could help promote zero-waste and address waste disposal violations.
Officials from the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES), ASEAN Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), National University of Laos (NUOL), embassies of ASEAN members in Vientiane, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) attended and judged the projects. The competition was organized by The ASEAN Foundation and funded by SAP.
The team from Vietnam, which presented a solution for ocean acidification and energy insecurity for sustainable blue economy development through innovative use of data, emerged victorious.
With the large participation, the ASEAN DSE competition managed to achieve its objective of enhancing awareness and appreciation of the ASEAN community among the ASEAN youth and tackling current socio-economic issues through data analytics proposals. The ASEAN DSE is listed under the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2021-2025. After the competition, the ASEAN youth participants will participate in several activities to be conducted in the Lao PDR including immersions and visits, where they will learn first-hand some of the country’s collaborative inclusivity and sustainability initiatives.
