Congresswoman Glona G. Labadlabad led the Philippine delegation to the 45th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) held on 18-22 October 2024 at the National Convention Center in Vientiane. AIPA was chaired by H.E. Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR and President of AIPA. The theme for this year's AIPA General Assembly is “The Role of Parliaments in Enhancing Connectivity and Inclusive Growth of ASEAN,” which aligns with the Lao PDR’s ASEAN 2024 chairship theme of “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.”
Congresswoman Labadlabad was joined by Congresswoman Rachel Marguerite B. Del Mar, Congressman Juan Fidel Felipe F. Nograles, Congressman Gustavo Alonzo S. Tambunting, Congressman Marquez Go, and, as high-level adviser, Former Deputy Speaker Rose Marie J. Arenas. The members of the Philippine House of Representatives participated in the series of AIPA meetings including the Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA), WAIPA Women’s Political Leaders’ Forum, Meeting with Standing Committees, Meeting with AIPA Observer Parliaments, and Plenary Meetings, among others.
The Meetings reviewed the AIPA Annual Report 2023-2024 and discussed ways to further promote cooperation and foster diplomacy within AIPA. Matters discussed over the 4-day General Assembly include combating drug challenges, promoting a plastic-free environment through joint action under the World Convention on Plastics, advocating for healthcare innovation, and enhancing rights and employment opportunities across the region.
