Philippine Commission on Women Chair Ermelita Valdeavilla led the Philippine delegation to the 3rd ASEAN Women Leaders’ Summit held on 21-23 August 2024 in Vientiane, Lao PDR.
Opened by Lao PDR Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, the Summit took the theme of “Strengthening the Care Economy and Resilience towards ASEAN Community Post-2025” with the primary objective of promoting the care economy agenda and addressing the challenges in supporting women and girls in the context of resilience building.
Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. and other ASEAN leaders also delivered video messages during the Summit.
The Municipality of Quinapondan, Eastern Samar was given the Care Economy Recognition Awards for its WE Care project (Women’s Economic Empowerment and Care). With the support of Oxfam, officials of the Municipality of Quinapondan implemented policies promoting the equitable redistribution of responsibilities for care between women and men.
The Summit was organized and led by the Lao Women’s Union, headed by its President, Mme. Aly Vongnobountham. LWU is a women’s rights organization established in 1955 to promote the role of women under the National Constitution. The Philippine Embassy in Vientiane regularly collaborates with the LWU on projects to advance the Gender and Development agenda.
