Pi Mai Lao, or Lao New Year, is a traditional festival that celebrates the start of a new year according to the Lao lunar calendar. The festivities include various customs and rituals, including the splashing of water, the offering food to monks, and the building of sand stupas.
The official festival, which lasts for three days, will be held from 14 to 16 April this year, although celebrations can last over a week as it is regarded to be the most important festival in Laos.
The first day, April 14, is the last day of the old year. Houses and villages are properly cleaned on the first day. Perfume, water and flowers are also prepared for the Lao New Year. The second day of the festival is the "day of no year", a day that falls neither in the old year nor in the new year. The last day of the festival, April 16, marks the start of the new year.
This year corresponds to the 2566th reckoning of the Buddhist Era.
